How did it all start?

Meade County is named after a Civil War Union general named James M. Meade. He was killed in action at the Battle of River Raisin during the War of 1812. Meade saw active service throughout the 1800s as a member of the US Infantry and fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.

The Battle of River Raisin was fought near modern-day Michigan, and it was a disaster for Meade’s regiment. Historians have noted that Meade was at the forefront of the battle in a very exposed position and was heavily wounded while leading a charge. His wounds eventually killed him. Due to his bravery in battle, Meade County was formed and named after him.
