Meade County, Kentucky, is a place of amazing natural beauty.   Meade County is a nature-lover’s paradise. If you’re planning a trip to the Natural Bridge State Park, or if you just want to get out and stretch your legs while enjoying the fresh air, here are some places that are worth checking out:

The Very first place Most Come to visit in Meade County is Otter Creek Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area. Not only is this one of the most beautiful spots in all of Kentucky, but it’s also home to an incredible variety of plant species. The preserve has over Many different kinds of trees ,species and history alone. Soak in the amazing views from Top of Buttermilk falls the old pump house

With a population of only a little over 7,000 people, Meade County is the smallest of Kentucky’s 120 counties. But it has plenty of history to offer its residents and visitors. Since Nucor arriving there have been lots of new opportunities offered to the Meade County Locals.

Finding its earliest inhabitants in the Archaic period, Meade is rich with Native American sites and artifacts. The county is home to five prehistoric Indian burial mounds—one in Slaughters, three in Dawson Springs and one near Brandenburg that was taken apart for the construction of the Louisville to Cincinnati Turnpike. The area was also a major settlement for Cherokee Indians prior to their forced removal to Oklahoma through the infamous Trail of Tears.

In 1819, John Drennan was appointed constable for the area that would become Meade County. Four years later, he served as captain of a group that petitioned for county status. On December 20, 1824,

“The act establishing Meade County out of parts of Hardin and Breckinridge Counties was approved, December 17, 1823, by His Excellency, John Adair, Governor of Kentucky. Joseph Stith, John H. Trent, William Ditto, William Garnett, Robert W. Washington, Joseph Atwill and William F. Foushee met at John Rush’s house in Buck Grove as designated in the act and organized, Monday, March 22, 1824, a county court. Each man produced a commission of a justice of the peace signed by the governor. Joseph Stith administered to John H. Trent “the oath required by the constitution of the United States together with the several oaths required by the constitution and the laws of this state.” John H. Trent in turn administered the same oaths to the other appointees.”

Governor George Madison made Meade County official by proclamation. It was named for General Samuel R. Meade, who had served under George Washington during the Revolutionary War and was later appointed Surveyor-General of Kentucky by President James Madison in 1808.

Meade County, Kentucky is a bit of a surprise to drivers who pass through on the stretch of Interstate 64 that cuts between Lexington and Louisville. Surrounded by farmland, it could easily be passed over without thought. However, those who stop in Meade discover a county with a rich history. While it may not be known primarily as a tourist destination, Meade has plenty to offer visitors interested in learning about local history.
