Ice-covered roads in central Kentucky, multiple collisions on Friday morning resulted in several interstate and road closures.

The icy conditions have caused major backups on I-75 in central Kentucky. Lexington Police were detouring drivers off the interstate at mile markers 108 and 109 after early Friday morning because roads were not safer for traveling any further.

The Statistics

A total of 63 non-injury crashes occurred between midnight and 9 a.m. Moreover, 11 injury crashes occurred between midnight and 2 p.m. 12 crashes resulted in injuries, 75 collisions resulted in no injuries 18 motorist assistance calls were received.

A staggering figure of 50 collisions per day in Lexington, was not anticipated by city officials and contractor crews working on streets and highways across the state during their off-season maintenance project, Rob Allen says.

Officials from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet sent teams out to salt these locations overnight.

However, Natasha Lacy, spokesperson for the state’s transportation department, says that doesn’t guarantee that the roads won’t freeze despite prior treatment.

As the day goes on, Lacy predicts that the situation will improve as the temperature rises and the sun is given more time to do its job exceptionally.

While traveling in these conditions, one must be aware that there may be black ice, drive cautiously, and provide space between one’s car and those surrounding one, according to Lacy.

Despite prior treatment, black ice can still form on roads if there is a low temperature, moisture, and a wet surface.
