For the sake of simplicity, we’ll break down most of the reasons people drink coffee into two categories: pleasure and productivity. Let’s start with pleasure.
There are a few different reasons that drinking a cup of coffee can be pleasant, and one or more of them will likely apply to you:

Many people don’t know where coffee comes from, how it’s grown, or even why anyone would drink it. But just because something is obscure doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about it. Coffee is a major part of the lives of millions of people around the globe, and we should be able to talk about it without embarrassment.
Coffee’s popularity has gone up and down over the years: in the late 1600s, it was known as a drink of the lower class because it was too bitter to be enjoyed without sugar; in the mid-1800s, it was the drink of choice for political revolutionaries who used its stimulating qualities to stay awake and alert; in the 1920s, coffee was among a handful of beverages—including alcohol—that were banned during Prohibition. No matter what time period people have been drinking it in, there are certain things that today’s coffee drinkers just can’t imagine living without.
