Charles Henry Blackwell was born on December 12, 1894 in the small town of Brandenburg, Meade County, Kentucky.Blackwell stood five feet eight inches tall and weighed approximately 150 pounds during his playing career. He threw right handed but batted from the left hand side of the plate.Charles Blackwell was an excellent contact hitter. He had an extraordinary eye for the ball and rarely struck out. Reportedly, he was an extremely disciplined hitter at the plate and had no problem waiting on his pitch to hit. In addition to hitting for average he also hit for power.During his Negro baseball career he posted a .323 lifetime batting average with a very impressive.507 slugging percentage. In the prime years of his career (1919-1926), Charles had a .333 (647for 1944) batting average. His best seasons in Negro baseball were 1919 (.376), 1921 (.402) and1922 (.382).Defensively, Charles was an out fielder. He possessed outstanding speed which gave him exceptional range in chasing down fly balls. Blackwell routinely robbed opposing hitters from an extra base hit.He also possessed excellent speed on the base paths and was a very smart runner. Over his careerCharles got more than his fair share of stolen bases.Blackwell’s obituary described his playing abilities as follows:“ He was to baseball what the “killer” is to prize fighting, a dangerous slugger, who was dynamite to a pitcher every time he walked up to the plate. Not only was he a great natural hitter from the left side which enabled him to often connect for two homers a game, but he was nearly everything in baseball well – fielding, running the bases and outwitting his rivals.” 

In late 1920 Charles Blackwell traveled with the Bacharach Giants to Cuba to play in theAmerican Series. The American Series pitted some of the top teams from the United States against the best teams from Cuba. In October of 1920 John McGraw brought his New York Giants team to Cuba to play the All Cubans and Almendares. After the conclusion of the NewYork Giants series, the Bacharach Giants arrived to take on teams representing Almendares and Habana. This series started on October 16th and ended on November 28th.The Bacharach Giants were managed by Andrew “Rube” Foster.
